Getting Off US Machines, The Latest
I've had a brief run of "getting off US servers", specifically for me that means mostly Google, here's the latest update with plenty to still go. As I always say, this is not about Google per se but about getting off US company infrastructure and onto either European (not UK), Australia(ish), or Aotearoa New Zealand company machines. And before you ask, no, I am not interested in self-hosting anything.
Replaced - uninstalled from my hardware/services - the following Google things with ...
- Gmail to Proton Mail
- Drive to Proton Drive
- Calendar to Proton Calendar
- Keep to Joplin and Cooked.wiki
- Tasks to
Todoist, Standard Notes - Keyboard to Futo(Android)
- Chrome to Vivaldi
- Calculator to Fossify Calculator
- Authenticator to 2FAS Authenticator
- File Manager to Fossify File Manager
Ah, I've made a mistake with Todoist as it's made in the US and ones data is stored on AWS, can't always be perfect eh, the journey continues. [UPDATE: already moved to Standard Notes]
I'm left with the following Google services/apps:
- Services
- Google Photos - the biggie, both in data AND just how good it is
- Contacts, waiting for Proton to give us a separate Contacts app
- Maps
- Find Hub
- Google search incl, Google Lens, Now Playing
- Google One
- Google Health (used to be Fitbit)
- Google Home
- Google Passwords
- Google Wallet
- Play Services
- YouTube: videos & music
- Apps
Todoist- Google Camera
- PhotoScan
- Google Clock
- Google Messages
- Google Recorder
- Snapseed
- Google Watch
- Google Weather
Let's be clear, I do have a Google phone so of course it's chock full of Google apps. Also I'm very unlikely to get rid of the following in a future you could describe as near:
- Find Hub - for the Google hardware I have
- Google search (it's still the best, and yes I have tried many many others)
- Google Health - goes with my Pixel Watch so until then it stays
- Google Home - goes with my home devices so until they go it stays
- Google Wallet - just don't feel comfortable with anything else yet, prove me wrong
- Play Services - until the other app stores prove themselves this stays
- YouTube - probably never going tbh
- Google Camera - it's on the phone so I'll use it until the phone changes
- Google Messages - will happily move when an open source app does RCS
- Google Watch - goes with my Pixel Watch so until that goes it stays
Which leaves me with the following to start replacing within a timeframe yet to be determined:
- A non-US phone
- A non-US watch
- Something non-US to replace the chatty machines at home
Not being on Google hardware will make it slightly easier but there'll still be work to do as I don't want to lose all functionality it gives me.
- Todoist, already moved to Standard Notes
- Google Maps
- Google One - will biff once the subscription expires
- Google Passwords - ugh, passkeys is my only hurdle with moving to 2FAS
- PhotoScan
- Google Clock
- Google Recorder - do I even need one of these, probably not
- Snapseed
- Google Weather
That's plenty to be getting on with until the next update!
