And now the small part I have worked on so far, focused on the Semmering railway from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, which was the first mountain railway in Europe built with a standard gauge track and completed in 1854 under the supervision of Carl von Ghega, who was born in Venice, at that time part of the Austrian Empire, to an Albanian family.

In order to avoid the construction of a rack railway the line winds up along the two sides of the Schwarza river valley before making a nearly 360° loop into the adjacent valley and then crossing underneath the Semmering mountain pass in a 1.5 kilometer tunnel before running down to Mürzzuschlag over a longer distance and thus without additional loops.

At Mürzzuschlag, there is a major train depot ("Heizhaus" in Austrian). From that town, I also constructed the now abandoned "Lokalbahn" to Neuberg an der Mürz, where a large sawmill is located and passengers can switch to a coach to Mürzsteg, where the hunting lodge of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I was located (and is now the summer residence of the Austrian president).

The current game year is 1865, at which there are already some nice steam locomotives with a speed of up to 80 km/h are available from the GET Alpine Add-on v0.3

Playing in wallclock mode my game takes about 1 second "real-life time" for 1 minute of "game time", which translates for about 1 min "real-life time" for 1 h "game time" or about 1/2 h "real-life time" for one day of "game time", which allows me to follow about 3-4 "game days" per session playing. Trains running the full length of the Semmering line make only one round-trip per "game day" at 80 km/h but this still fine to me, as I don't like hectic playing against the clock.

For best use of the mostly single-track lines, I extensively used the "timetable function" of JGRPP, although not as elaborate as discussed here. Still, adds an extra temporal dimension to the planning process and is a lot of fun to set up and watch, but can also give you quite a bit of a headache if there are deadlocks

In the coming weeks, I will continue the Südbahn down the large valley in the center to Bruck an der Mur and then Graz, the capital city of Styria and just at the bottom edge of the map.
