"textContent": "> Does the quality of fuel affect that value?\n\nIn real-life yes, in TTD no: the fuel quality would affect the amount of fuel you need to burn to maintain firebox temperature & boiler pressure, so if TTD kept track of fuel consumption then yes that would be something -- lower mean effective pressure at constant fuel consumption, higher fuel consumption at constant mean boiler pressure. But it's not a thing.\n\n\n> I started a game now to test everything from 1850 with calendar timekeeping. I noticed the default lifetime for engines was reduced from 40 to 15 (at least for early designs). What's the rationale here? Esp. since the set has high purchase costs, so it really is quite steep to have to buy again so quickly. If you take the SBB Ec 2/5 it lasted between 30 and 40 years before being retired. The GWR Iron Duke were used up to 38 years (from 1847 to 1884 the longest) without overhaul; a few were converted after 23 years and lasted an extra 22 (from 1847, converted 1870, withdrawn 1892). I'm pretty sure a lot of old locomotives got withdrawn because they were becoming technologically obsolete (not powerful enough for higher gradients and heavier trains) but not because hey fell apart (which is what TTD does when the engines come to the end of their model life). So I think having 30 years lifetime for the engines currently having 15, and 40 for the ones having a lifetime of 30, may be more accurate. A couple could also be hardcoded based on references (e.g. the Fairy Queen operating in regular service for >55 years, or some of the Zimbabwe Class 15 from 1940-1952 still being in service to this day.\n\nStatistics: Posted by althonos — 25 May 2026 11:09\n\n* * *",
