Here's the algorithm I use to build a long train with as little clicking as possible:

1. Create a short train with, say, 4 cars.
2. Clone the whole train.
3. Attach the cars from the second train to the first train. Hold Ctrl to drag the whole consist.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 as needed. In just 5 repetitions, you'll get a consist of 128 cars.

Yeah, I admit it, but it's still a pain.
