I find the patchy appearance of the fields very annoying (they should be at least 3x3 or 4x4 continous in my opinion) and also the fact that they re-appear elsewhere even after one bulldozes them.

IMHO the size and content of fields should change over time. Before 1950, the current patchy aspect isn't that bad. After 1950 to 2000 the fields should progressively merge to make bigger ones, until 2010 when each farm should have only 1 or 2 big fields with different cultures.

Current patchy fields are pretty accurate for European countries (at least France), especialy before 2000:
