Regarding the use of Power Plants and Coal mines, I think it would be even more challenging (in a good way) to add some sort of electrical grid to complement the production of coal, and the consumption of said coal at the plants, that produce in kW-Electricity.

There is already a NewGRF which goes along these lines:

WIRES

However, it's more than 10 years old now, has never been updated since then, and does not include the source code.

Still, it could be inspiration for a new attempt at such a NewGRF - which is the proper way to implement, not the main game code.
