As far as I am aware this is the vanilla ship behaviour. Ships aren't required to be parallel to docks.

Thanks for the quick reply. I searched my HD and found version 0.68; the upper screenshot is from 0.68, the lower one from 0.71. Both screenshots were taken from the same savegame, it's actually the same ship docking.

And you're right, the issue is most likely not with the docks, but with the ships at least partially ignoring the water based structures.
