You'll need to find out what name they are mapped to by your keyboard and/or your OS. That will depend on what make/model of keyboard, and what OS you have, as to how you'll be able to do that.

The mostly likely easiest way is to check with an application that allows you to customise it's keyboard shortcuts via a GUI, and see what your 'thumb' buttons get reported as.
