Well, in OpenTTD case their share is(was) 0 so it's not like players lose much. And it comes with a convenience of automatic updates and ability to easily select a version you need in multiplayer.

It's not that there are new - and possibly conflicting - OpenTTD versions published every couple of days or weeks, but rather one major release every year or two, plus a few minor updates inbetween - so why the hell do you need an automatic system for this when simply downloading, unpacking, and running from this site takes only a minute or so?!?
