They don't own any of the IP currently used in oTTD.

The IP they own is likely "Transport Tycoon" & "Transport Tycoon Deluxe", which OTTD does use in its name & directly replicates. Either way you can download openttd from the official site still and use its open-source graphics so you never actually need to buy the original anyway, unless Atari is preparing to launch a delayed legal move against OTTD after all these years now they've remembered that TT/TTD exist.
