Until CET came along, these sets were a good substitute. They aren't anymore.

Totally agree - CET is still the best match I could find.

The only thing I don't really like - but this is possibly more a matter of the general town placement algorithm and not the CET town NewGRF itself - is that the towns all look "round" while often they are more irregular in shape, stretching in a valley or along a river or a coastline. Guess this has to be still manually corrected for the most visible cases.
