If I were developing an AI, I would choose the cheapest track with a reasonable speed limit. Depending on the add-on settings, the costs of the fastest track may be prohibitively high.
This may be one reason why I wanted to distinguish tracks. I think it's possible to test the costs to build something without actually building anything.
Thinking of NewGRF compatibility I've taken the advice, it's better to be compatible and generic than otherwise
Additionally, some engines have variable power depending on the track type
