I saw that strange German character that resembles a b on the keyboard, but it was an old typewriter, probably from pre-war times.

No no no, that's still on all Germany computer keyboards and it's the "ß" or "eszett", also called "sharp S"

I absolutely love this character for whatever reason but it is an "endangered species"
