If does work.

You need to use the vehicle lists to activate an auto-replace for that vehicle. Any vehicle already in a depot at the moment you start the auto-replace won't get auto-replaced until it visits enters a depot. If the vehicle is stopped as well, then hitting that button will cause it to be replaced.
