The capital city of the Grounders—Polis—is overflowing with people from all Thirteen Clans. The city burns bright with celebration as they commemorate the fall of the mountain. Laughter echoes through the streets, lanterns illuminate every corner, and merriment flows like wine beneath the night sky. Yet the Commander of the Thirteen Clans is absent from the tower where she resides. A sentry stationed at the gates claims he saw Heda leaving Polis beneath the cover of night with only a handful of her personal guards. He was ordered to remain silent about the excursion. Why? What matter could drive the Commander away in such secrecy and haste? Is this merely a private rendezvous beneath the stars— or the first warning of the strife yet to come?
