A Florida fire lieutenant and his wife are facing serious child abuse charges after their adopted 12-year-old daughter was allegedly locked in her room for years. This is truly awful to hear about, and it shines a light on a really grim situation that police in Coral Springs, Florida, are now investigating.

Joel Kohnert, 44, and Jennifer Kohnert, 45, are both charged with child abuse without great bodily harm. According to People, the allegations came to light in February when a school resource officer alerted authorities to claims that the 12-year-old girl had been confined to her room at night. The reported reason for this extreme measure was that she allegedly wandered the house and took items from other family members.

What’s even more heartbreaking is the detail of the alleged conditions she endured. Police reports indicate that during this period, the girl was reportedly denied access to a bathroom, which tragically led to her urinating on the floor. In the mornings, she was allegedly forced to clean up the urine, and as an added punishment, she had to write Bible verses. It’s just devastating to imagine any child going through something like that.

The reasoning here just makes the whole situation even more confusing

When police interviewed the girl, she recounted a horrific two- to three-year period where she was locked in her room overnight. She also claimed she was required to bathe outside, even in “inadequate weather conditions,” which is just an awful thing for anyone, let alone a child. She described her room as incredibly sparse, with just an air mattress, minimal furniture, and no toys or personal items at all.

To further isolate her, a sound machine was reportedly kept at a high volume in her room, presumably to prevent her from hearing other family members inside the home. The allegations don’t stop there. The girl also told police that Jennifer, her adoptive mother, had physically abused her, allegedly pulling her hair, slapping her, kicking her, and calling her derogatory names. It is a devastating subversion of trust when a parent or a trusted mentor who allegedly abused two minors he coached becomes the source of trauma.

The Kohnerts’ three biological children were also questioned by police, and they allegedly confirmed that their adopted sister was indeed locked in her room and that they were not subjected to the same harsh treatment. This kind of disparity in how children are treated within the same home is just shocking. Joel Kohnert holds a position of public trust as a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue lieutenant. During a court appearance for Joel and Jennifer, their attorney described them as “devout Christians.”

The judge quickly countered that claim, stating, “When you allegedly have got a 12-year-old child who is locked in a room for upwards of three years and is forced to urinate and defecate in the room and then clean it up with her clothes, that is not a religious issue, that is something else.” I think the judge hit the nail on the head there. The severity of the alleged abuse seems to transcend any religious justification.

It’s not immediately clear whether Joel or Jennifer Kohnert have entered a plea in this case. This whole situation is a stark reminder that appearances can be incredibly deceiving, and it’s a truly difficult story to process.
