European leaders warn Israel against a Lebanon ground offensive, but the fighting has already taken a dangerous turn

Israel has begun ground operations in southern Lebanon despite warnings from European leaders against a broader offensive. As reported by Politico Europe, the Israel Defense Forces said Monday that they had launched “limited and targeted ground operations” against what they described as key Hezbollah strongholds in the south.

The move came after leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and the U.K. issued a joint statement urging Israel not to pursue a full ground offensive in Lebanon. They called for a political solution and said officials from both countries should engage in negotiations to prevent a wider conflict.

Those leaders warned that a significant Israeli ground offensive would carry devastating humanitarian consequences and risk becoming a prolonged conflict. They also said the humanitarian situation in Lebanon, including mass displacement, was already deeply alarming.

The warning came as the conflict was already escalating

Israel’s operation follows missile attacks launched by the Iran-backed group Hezbollah and is unfolding within the broader context of the U.S.-Israeli war on Tehran. Since March 3, Israeli bombardments have killed more than 800 people, including more than 100 children, while more than 1 million people have been displaced, with Hormuz coalition pressure still hanging over the wider conflict.

Canada, alongside France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, expresses grave concern over the escalating conflict in Lebanon and calls for immediate de-escalation by all parties.

Israel has invaded Lebanon multiple times over the past five decades, including operations in 2024 tied to efforts to secure its northern border from rocket fire. That history has added to concerns that the latest incursion could expand beyond the limited scope Israel has described.

The European statement also condemned Hezbollah’s attacks and backed the Lebanese government’s efforts to disarm the group. Hezbollah has previously rejected proposals from Beirut, leaving Lebanon caught between an escalating military campaign and growing international pressure, as allied warship refusals have also surfaced around the broader regional response.

The start of ground operations has now pushed the conflict beyond warnings and into a more dangerous phase.
