Vance calls Ocasio-Cortez’s Taiwan answer ‘embarrassing,’ but her response is fueling 2028 chatter

Vice President Vance criticized Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez this week, calling her recent response to a question about Taiwan “embarrassing.” The comments come as speculation continues about her potential presidential ambitions in 2028.

As reported by The Hill, Vance made the remarks during an appearance on “The Story” with Martha MacCallum. He argued that Ocasio-Cortez’s answer at the Munich Security Conference reflected poorly on her readiness for global leadership.

“Look, that was embarrassing,” Vance said. He added that if he had given a similar answer, he would tell himself to “go read a book about China and Taiwan before I go out on the world stage again,” and said he was skeptical she would show that kind of humility.

The exchange occurred over the weekend at the annual Munich Security Conference. Ocasio-Cortez was asked whether the United States would and should commit troops to defend Taiwan if China were to move against it. The scrutiny has extended to the AOC Munich conference stumbles.

She responded by emphasizing de-escalation, saying it has long been U.S. policy to avoid such a confrontation and expressing hope that economic and diplomatic efforts would prevent the situation from reaching that point. Her answer focused on avoiding conflict rather than directly addressing the troop commitment question.
