Is the Canadian government “examining” the idea of forced military service as of June 5, 2026? No, that’s not true: A National Defence spokesperson told VérifRadar in an email that it is not examining mandatory service and that in times of crisis “Participation in an expanded Reserve Force would be entirely voluntary.” Canada has not had mandatory military service since the end of World War Two, and Canada’s troops were “almost entirely” voluntary in that war, per the Canadian War Museum. There is no publicly available indication that the government is planning to change that.
