Analysis: The noose and its implications for Canada’s Black communities

During the second senate reading of proposed bill C-9 titled An Act to amend the Criminal Code, in April 2026, Independent Senator Paulette Senior suggested including the noose as a hate symbol. That sparked some comments surrounding the symbol that can blur its modern implications and obscure Canada's history. VérifRadar spoke with Natasha Henry-Dixon, professor of African Canadian history at York University, to provide more historical and contemporary context on it, as well as a better understanding of the symbol's mechanisms, particularly in relation to Black communities in Canada.
