OK, my additional testing says 34.1.0 suffers, 34.0.1 is the functional build. MC, can you double-check your versions?

I also cherry-picked every change I made since 34.0.1 into it (including the 34.2.0 updates which I initially thought might be suspect), and still can't reproduce, so I don't think it's my ICU or emoji cluster work, which should only apply in very specific cases which are not triggered here, so at least I'm not losing my logical reasoning faculties (yet!), but that also means we'll probably have to step through every pull in 34.1.0 to narrow it down, and there were a bunch.
