This happens regularly, somewhere between 2:00 and 4:00 AM UTC, sometimes a little later. Logging into Gmail in a different tab solves the problem, but it's clear the servers are heavily loaded, and videos start playing with a noticeable delay around the specified time. So, this isn't a whim on YouTube's part, but a genuine attempt to reduce the load. I don't know if this is due to the influx of users or some internal, planned activity on YouTube's servers.
