+1 for encrypting first, then putting wherever you want, in my humble opinion you should be doing this anyway before putting them on the usb stick, considering how important they are. That said, i wouldn’t be concerned with encrypting them to an already encrypted place, like proton or ente for example, but that is just me. Its always about finding a nice balance, amirite?
Ive tested picocrypt and liked it, its lightweight and simple, and you can also download the files for itself which may be comforting.
Also, are they small enough to add to a password manager? May be another option.
Final thing (unsolicited, take it or leave it, no offense), get a nice setup for such things then be at peace. Eg, have some secure/private/convenient way to store and sync via cloud, have some hardware alternative if desired, stay organized with a password manager, then just relax and know its fine. If possible, just have one or two passwords you need to remember (pw manager and authenticator?) and be at peace with it all. Don’t read complacent, you can still learn and check on things every now and then. Use the pw manager for notes as well to help you stay organized.
