This is not the first time I saw this.
I used to get stuck in choosing between Brave and Firefox because the former has had controversies leading me to pursue the so-called lesser evil. This way of thinking works if I include other companies like Meta and Google, but will definitely make myself impossible to make a decision and enjoy technology while having more privacy.
Thus I have the following two ways of thinking:
* None of the companies are perfect and pure, as you will see Firefox being supported by Google, their stance being changed when new CEO takes over…
* The best way to determine if I should use Brave (or which browser is for me), is to understand my needs, not limited to my threat model but what I really want (other than convenience); more importantly, try to use them and see if I feel comfortable and the tools meet my expectation.
I am towards Brave not because I think they are good persons. Indeed, there are somethings just being marketed, and I don’t like they compare to other privacy-oriented companies, like Firefox and DuckDuckGo (you will see they block much more trackers on the search than on Google Search). But as I found Safari’s design is too addictive, making me so easy to repeatedly visit websites like social media thanks to their effectiveness of address bar. While Brave has their stuff on by default, they won’t keep bothering you after turning off, which is unlike other companies which will continue reminding you in different ways. I am also surprised if I search something like Brave vs Firefox (or Safari on iOS 26), Brave Search didn’t say they are superior, and even Safari has its advantages of anti-fingerprinting, but DuckDuckGo said Brave is better.
Besides looking at what it has been told online, I try to see what has NOT been told or said by observing what they do quietly (not necessarily the shady things) by myself. That’s why I am more able to settle on Firefox on my old Mac, and on Brave on iPhone and iPad. Especially when I acknowledge I want quiet internet and Brave can fit me. Quiet internet is somehow motivating me to consider more on privacy-oriented tools, not whether the companies are perfectly kind without wrongdoings.
