> I’ve never heard of a browser that costs money to use, let alone 60 dollars with only
Oh man, you’re dragging me right down memory lane with this. Netscape used to cost money, Opera cost money, and there were even various early Mac browsers before Safari that charged you, too. The industry only shifted away from that monetization structure because of the browser wars and the pivot toward monetizing the users themselves.
A lot of people here might not fall into this category, but the vast majority of everyday users are absolutely still paying a high price to use their browser today. They’re just paying for it with their personal data, sponsored search results, and a bunch of other monetization features.
I know some users get incredibly hung up on the presence of certain features being included in a browser and just want them stripped out completely. I personally don’t get it if the features are mostly insignificant and can be ignored.
You have to remember, Brave isn’t some garden variety amateur hobby fork, it’s a serious product that gives great security and innovative utility, like their ad blocker which is going to withstand the inevitable MV3 apocalypse that’s still going to affect other chromium browsers once it actually kicks into high gear.
The money to develop this stuff has to come from somewhere. If tech savvy users are just going to ignore those extra features anyway, it’s not a prob. But other people are obsessing over having them removed, I have no issue with letting those bothered users pay a fee to remove them, and support the browser because otherwise, they could not be monetized.
