You don’t need to do either or, you can do both. For example use simple login for the vast majority of logins but use a custom domain for important services like banking, password manager, etc… You can then also use the custom domain if a website won’t accept an alias address. This is the setup I use and it’s very rare a simple login address isn’t accepted.
