I respect all the comments here, however from an older person’s perspective, this is my take. As has been mentioned there are several scenarios where this technique of safeguarding ONE SECRET may be useful Just as when one buys property, life insurance is a necessity, and so is interaction with a lawyer. And similarly, when couples live together over 1 year, or marry, and especially when children arrive, there is also another lawyer interaction for making wills. What I am getting at, is there should be already a relationship formed. And having to administer this one of 3 card scenario is a no-brainer. There may be other people in your life with the same level of trust, but that profession has all the workings to deal with this transfer of trust and the system to safeguard it, so it is never lost. At least one of the card holders needs to be a totally neutral person but guided by the wishes of the account holder. Collusion is a totally reasonable risk and so is anarchy within family relationships. Just ask a family lawyer about their experiences with families dealing with, THE family cottage of their parents ! It’s a significant income earner. ( disclosure, I am not a lawyer ) Change is a part of life, relationships change and so do people. Personally, I think the Legacy feature of most PM’s deal with this nicely, and if yours doesn’t have that feature, then, in my mind that’s reason enough to switch. As is often said, don’t become a slave to your device or software, be reasonable.
