Use Firefox Translation Models for on-device translation on Android

Short description

An Android translator app that performs text and image translation completely offline using on-device models. Language packs contain the full translation models, translation happens on your device, no requests are sent to external servers.

Supports automatic language detection and transliteration for non-latin scripts. There’s also a built-in word dictionary & an API to other apps, so that they can request translations to be performed for them

Why I think this tool should be added

Background

This tool recommendation is a product of this PG discussion on mobile translator tools. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and only have good things to say

Edit: Here’s a pretty interesting blog post from the dev, detailing the app’s genesis

Criteria

Offline Translator meets all Language Tools criteria:

  1. Must be open source : Offline Translator’s source code is posted on GitHub, covered under a GPL-3.0 license
  2. Must be possible to self-host: network connectivity is only required for initial model download. After this, it runs local-only; network access can be blocked entirely

Capability Gap

The Offline Translator would represent the first local translation tool available for PG’s recommended mobile OS (GrapheneOS).

Other recommended translation tools do not have an Android app, requiring either a networked connection to a self-hosted instance or broader WLAN connectivity
