Firefighter killed during training exercise in West Ridge

A veteran firefighter was killed during a training exercise in West Ridge Thursday afternoon, according to Chicago Fire Department officials.

The firefighter was injured in the 6600 block of North Kedzie Avenue around 3 p.m. and was taken to St. Francis Hospital, CFD officials said. Circumstances surrounding the exercise weren’t immediately available, but it was unrelated to the water rescue demonstration held in the morning near Navy Pier, officials added

A procession was held between St. Francis Hospital and the Medical Examiner’s Office in West Loop. The firefighter has been a member of the department for 30 years, officials said.
