It bolsters the case for wraparound supports, whether embedded within a college or offered by an outside organization.</p><p><b>How it helps</b>: Applicants to One Million Degrees are matched with a program coordinator who can connect them to financial, academic, professional and personal supports. These could include tutoring or help finding child care. The program also provides an annual stipend of $700-$1000 that full-time students can put toward costs like books and transportation, so long as they’re passing their classes and attending required meetings.</p><p><b>Encouraging numbers</b>: Funded largely by donations and grants, One Million Degrees often works with first-generation and low-income community college students. Researchers found 63% of participants earned a degree within eight years, compared with 55% of their peers who didn't get the same support. Seven years after starting the program, participants made an average $14,000 more annually than other students.</p><p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https://chicago.suntimes.com/education/2026/03/11/one-million-degrees-program-helps-city-colleges-students-earn-more-uchicago-study-finds\" ><b>READ MORE</b></a></p><hr><p></p><h3>MUSIC 🎫</h3><div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center> <div class=\"Enhancement-item\" data-crop=\"\"> <figure class=\"Figure\"><a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-960000\" name=\"image-960000\"></a> <picture data-crop=\"medium\"> <source type=\"image/webp\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-srcset=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/58e7946/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/490x275!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/356c861/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/980x550!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG 2x\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" srcset=\"data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" /> <source width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-srcset=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/39be701/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" srcset=\"data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" /> <img class=\"Image\" alt=\"Lizzo is among the big names playing Ravinia Festival this summer for the first time. | Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times file\" srcset=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/39be701/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f9364e9/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/980x550!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG 2x\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-src=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/39be701/2147483647/strip/true/crop/5025x2820+0+265/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fa8%2Ff6%2F3e4080094c579fef89da69448946%2Flizzo-101622-12.JPG\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" src=\"data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" > </picture> <div class=\"Figure-content\"><figcaption class=\"Figure-caption\"><p>Lizzo is among the big names playing Ravinia Festival this summer for the first time.</p></figcaption><span class=\"line\"></span><div class=\"Figure-credit\"><p>Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times file</p></div></div> </figure> </div> </div><p></p><h3><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https://newsletters.suntimes.com/t/t-l-wtludky-tlkjhhnv-k/\" target=\"_blank\" >Labrinth, Lizzo, Ricky Martin, Chance the Rapper to make their Ravinia debuts</a></h3><h5>By <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https://newsletters.suntimes.com/t/t-l-wtludky-tlkjhhnv-u/\" target=\"_blank\" >Ambar Colón</a></h5><p><b>Fresh headliners</b>: Labrinth, Lizzo, Ricky Martin, Hugh Jackman and Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper will debut at Ravinia Festival this summer, part of a historic season that features the reopening of the park's renovated iconic pavilion.</p><p><b>Masters of their craft</b>: Dozens of legendary performers will return to perform throughout the summer, including Paul Simon (July 17-18), Gladys Knight (Aug. 11), Bonnie Raitt (Aug. 22), Brandi Carlile (Aug. 26) and Jacob Collier (Sept. 23). The study found only 31 affordable homes are available for rent for every 100 extremely low-income renter households in the metro area. In Illinois, the number of available homes is 34.</p><p><b>Income, costs</b>: Extremely low-income households' annual incomes are at or below 30% of the area median income. In Chicago, that’s $35,970 for a family of four and $25,200 for an individual. In most of these, people are working low-wage jobs, are seniors or have a disability, according to the report. About 76% of such households in Chicago are spending more than half of their income on rent.</p><p><b>Solutions?</b>: Much of the recent apartment development in Chicago is luxury or high-end because developers can’t afford to build lower-rate units without government subsidies. Expanding access to rental assistance and building deeply affordable rental homes could help ease the shortage, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition.</p><p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https://chicago.suntimes.com/real-estate/2026/03/06/chicago-225-000-affordable-rental-units-poorest-residents-nlihc-report\" ><b>READ MORE</b></a></p><hr><p></p><h3>MORE NEWS YOU NEED 🗞️</h3><div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center> <div class=\"Enhancement-item\" data-crop=\"\"> <figure class=\"Figure\"><a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-570000\" name=\"image-570000\"></a> <picture data-crop=\"medium\"> <source type=\"image/webp\" width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-srcset=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/304dbbe/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6122x3436+0+324/resize/490x275!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fb6%2F9d%2F4618885531f54464450834912b3c%2Fmerlin-108888068.jpg 1x,https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f9eb339/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6122x3436+0+324/resize/980x550!/format/webp/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fb6%2F9d%2F4618885531f54464450834912b3c%2Fmerlin-108888068.jpg 2x\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" srcset=\"data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" /> <source width=\"490\" height=\"275\" data-srcset=\"https://cst.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/825100c/2147483647/strip/true/crop/6122x3436+0+324/resize/490x275!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fchorus-production-cst-web.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com%2Fbrightspot%2Fb6%2F9d%2F4618885531f54464450834912b3c%2Fmerlin-108888068.jpg\" data-lazy-load=\"true\" srcset=\"data:image/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciIHZlcnNpb249IjEuMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIyNzVweCIgd2lkdGg9IjQ5MHB4Ij48L3N2Zz4=\" /> <img class=\"Image\" alt=\"A campaign poster for the Dolton Mayor Tiffany A.
