Police: Residents rescued from armed intruder in Arlington Heights
Police responding to a reported burglary in progress at an Arlington Heights home Thursday morning rescued a family from an armed intruder, authorities said.
Hours later, a large police presence remains on the scene in the 800 block of North Chestnut Avenue amid a standoff with the suspected perpetrator.
The events began shortly after 7:33 a.m. when police officers called to the single-family residence determined a suspected armed offender was inside with two homeowners, officials said.
The residents were able to secure themselves inside a bedroom and call 911, according to Arlington Heights police.
Officers burst into the home, located the residents and led them outside to safety, police said. During the rescue, officers reported hearing a gunshot inside the home, authorities said.
