Intelligencer highlights the mischaracterization of writing by neurodivergent and ESL writers as AI-generated. Emma Alpern theorizes that ESL writes “Queen’s English,” the formal, unemotional prose English learners are taught to emulate. She notes the “AI accent ... also has some overlap with what you might call a neurodivergent affect.” “Carlos, a 24-year-old from Brazil, believes AI models and autistic people might have a similar media appetite, voraciously digesting large amounts of text.” He cites social isolation leading to “alternative methods to emotionally connect to others.” That sounds a little like an LLM.
