Elizabeth “Vicky” Spelman, professor of philosophy at Smith College, died this past December. Professor Spelman was known for her work in feminist philosophy, and also wrote on philosophical issues related to race, ethics, personhood, trash, and other subjects. She is the author of Inessential Woman: Problems of Exclusion in Feminist Thought (1988), Fruits of Sorrow: Framing Our Attention to Suffering (1997), and Trash Talks: Revelations in the Rubbish (2016), among other works. You can learn more about her writing here. Professor Spelman joined the faculty of Smith College in 1982. Prior to that, she had taught at Amherst College and Carleton College. She earned her PhD from Johns Hopkins University and her BA from Wellesley College. She died on December 26th, 2025. There is an obituary here. (via Steven Gross) The post Elizabeth V.
