Malcolm Budd, emeritus professor of philosophy at University College London, has died. Professor Budd was especially well-known for his work in the philosophy of art and music and on the philosophy of Wittgenstein, but also had interests in the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of nature, the philosophy of perception, moral philosophy, and the philosophy of Kant. His books include Music and the Emotions (1985), Wittgenstein’s Philosophy of Psychology (1989), Values of Art (1995), The Aesthetic Appreciation of Nature (2002), and Aesthetic Essays (2008), among other works. He joined the philosophy faculty of University College London in 1970, and was the Grote Professor of the Philosophy of Mind and Logic there from 1998 until his retirement in 2001. As a student at Cambridge University he studied mathematics and philosophy. Professor Budd died on February 17th, 2026.
