"textContent": "I’ve learned that the biggest mistake teams make isn't skipping research—it’s failing to visualize it. Data in a spreadsheet is hard to act on; data on a map becomes a strategy.\n\nHowever, not all maps are created equal. Depending on where you are in the product lifecycle, you need a specific lens to look through. Here is a breakdown of the essential UX mapping techniques every designer should master.\n\n### **The Discovery Phase: Empathy and Affinity**\n\nBefore you build, you must understand.\n\n * **Affinity Map** : This is your primary tool for synthesizing raw research. It helps you categorise data and extract key themes from chaos.\n * **Empathy Map** : A summary of the user experience. By documenting what users **say, think, do, and feel** , you create a shared understanding of their emotional state.\n\n\n\n### **The Journey Phase: Mapping the Path**\n\nOnce you know the user, you must map their movement.\n\n * **Customer Journey Map** : A step-by-step visualization of a customer achieving a task while interacting with your specific product.\n * **Experience Map** : A broader view that captures the _entire_ experience a user goes through while solving a specific problem, even outside your product.\n\n\n\n### **The Structural Phase: Architecture and Logic**\n\nNow, we define the product's bones.\n\n * **Site Map** : A visual tool to organize content and structure. This is the foundation of a clean and navigable product.\n * **Flow Map** : A diagram showing the exact path a user takes from the starting point to the final interaction. It’s the ultimate logic check for your UI.\n\n\n\n### **The High-Level Strategy: Ecosystems and Blueprints**\n\nFor senior-level complexity, we zoom out.\n\n * **Ecosystem Map** : A visual of all people, products, and services a user interacts with.\n * **Service Map (Blueprint)** : This connects the front-stage (what the user sees) with the back-stage (the internal processes and technology that make it happen).\n\n\n\n**The Senior Perspective:** Don't just map for the sake of mapping. Choose the technique that answers your most pressing question.\n\nWhether it's a **Cognitive Map** to understand mental perceptions or a **Roadmap** to align the team on the future, these visual tools are what turn \"designers\" into \"product strategists.\"",
