Lymelight Festival Brings Music, Creativity and Summer Atmosphere to Newcastle-under-Lyme

The sun blazed over Newcastle-under-Lyme across the Bank Holiday weekend as thousands of people headed into town for this year’s Lymelight Festival, with soaring temperatures doing little to slow down the crowds or dampen the atmosphere.

Even the beer struggled in the heat at times, but the mood across the town centre remained upbeat, energetic and full of laughter as festivalgoers packed out the streets, stages and venues for two days of live music, creativity and community spirit.

Now in its 13th year, the free festival once again transformed Newcastle town centre into a celebration of grassroots music and culture, with more than 60 acts performing across the Guildhall Stage, Ironmarket Stage and 6 Towns Radio Acoustic Stage, alongside fringe events in venues including The Rigger, Artisan Tap and The Crossways.

We visited on the Saturday and the atmosphere throughout the town was fantastic. All three stages pulled in strong crowds throughout the day, with people moving between live music, markets, workshops and local businesses enjoying the sunshine.

Alongside the performances, Newcastle’s high street remained busy with independent shops open across the weekend, while artisan market stalls lined the town centre, adding to the festival feel.

One of the standout additions away from the music was the free Album Art workshop with Ian Mood at the Lancaster Building, delivered in partnership with ArtsKeele. The relaxed and creative session gave visitors the chance to design their own artwork and proved hugely popular throughout the afternoon.

We also spent time exploring the Drop City Books pop-up shop and Lit at Lymelight activities, which brought an extra cultural element to the weekend with books, workshops and family-friendly events woven into the programme.

Across the town, there was a real sense of people simply enjoying being out together. Friends gathered outside venues, families filled the streets and music echoed through the centre from midday into the evening.

Lymelight Festival has become one of the highlights of Newcastle-under-Lyme’s cultural calendar, not just for the music, but for the way it brings life into the town centre and supports local venues, creatives, businesses and independent traders.

With another successful year complete, the festival once again showed the value of free, accessible events in bringing communities together and creating a reason for people to spend time in the heart of the town.
