"textContent": "We had the opportunity to sit down with **Vana** on their first headliner, the Lady In Red Tour, and play a little \"This or That\" to get to know the band members. From fun preferences to quick-fire choices, it was a great way to learn more about the personalities behind the music.\n\n* * *\n\n**MSM: What's a song or artist that you have had on repeat lately?**\n\nVana: I personally can't stop listening to Sace6. I'm a really big fan of them. I think they're super innovative. I love R&B and I love metal, and they do a perfect blend of that, and we've also been on a huge Ariana Grande binge as well.\n\nHarlan: Lately, I've been listening to someone called C:/18hzr/breakcore (18 kilohertz breakcore)\n\n**MSM: I'll have to check them out!**\n\nVana: We listen to a lot of Kendrick. We predominantly listen to hip hop when we build the stage, so me and the boys just get real ignorant. It's fun. Very cool.\n\n**MSM: I notice that a lot of bands I get to chat with in the metal scene listen to a wide variety of music. I think people expect them to mostly listen to the genre of music that they play.**\n\nVana: Yeah, I think especially when you're touring and you're playing metal all the time, I think a lot of people expect metal artists to only listen to metal, but a lot of heavy bands like listening to hyper pop.\n\nHarlan: Yeah, because you get jaded.\n\nVana: You do, and you want to keep it fun and you want to keep it interesting.\n\n**MSM: You don't want to be stuck in a box of only one genre.**\n\nHarlan: Yeah, you don't want to oversaturate your ears as well.\n\n**MSM: What do you do in your spare time together on tour, if you have any?**\n\nVana: Spare time. Who's that?\n\nHarlan: We have the most fun we could ever have, literally doing nothing. We are all so close and have a knack for making the most boring thing the most exciting thing ever, just because we enjoy hanging out together. Me and Van particularly, sit down and workshop jokes. We start writing jokes like we're serious comedy writers or something and just workshop how we can create new bits and it's sick. We love it.\n\nVana: Yeah, other than that, we like to explore as much as we can. Get out and see the towns that we're in.\n\n**MSM: Do you go for more city or nature vibes when exploring? What do you like to see?**\n\nHarlan: When we're traveling...gas stations.\n\nVana: Yeah, we like to rate our favorite Loves, Pilots, etc. based on the bathroom quality. But when we were in the smaller vehicle, we would do a lot of nature stuff. We were driving through the day and could just stop off at a lake or something like that. This time around it has been more city locked, but yeah we always try.\n\n**MSM: I love the masks and aesthetic, but at the same time you guys let everyone see your personalities and who you are, and your beautiful friendships. You guys seem to have the best time together and your love for each other shows. So yeah, we get the cool masks and aesthetic but without the anonymity. Fans appreciate getting to know you all.**\n\nVana: I think for me, the masks, and when we get on stage, we all embody a character, and I feel like it's a way to portray a visual aesthetic that looks sick as fuck, but outside of that, as soon as we get off stage, we're back to being ourselves.\n\nHarlan: Everyone in the band has such a unique and striking personality; it would be criminal to not lean into the fact that we're all this eclectic bunch of people who are into so many different things, and I think that's one of the coolest parts. I was kind of sad initially when I heard we were all going to be masked up. I was like, \"But we're all so cool...\"\n\n**MSM: That's definitely my favorite part about you guys.**\n\n**MSM: What is in your bunk currently?**\n\nVana: I currently have a dehumidifier, which makes water. It's like a rainforest in there at night. It rains because of the condensation. I have a Minecraft duvet, and matching pillowcase. I have, what else do I have in there? My laundry bag. I have my nebulizer and I have melatonin gummies.\n\n**MSM: Essentials**\n\nHarlan: I got exposed yesterday for having a \"prison bunk.\"\n\nVana: He does have a prison bunk.\n\nHarlan: Because I tour manage for the group as well as playing in the band, I take care of all the day-to-day management and stuff. So I lifted my mattress yesterday and Phil was like, what the fuck is going on under your mattress? He's like, \"You have settlements, you have the money, you have passports. You look like you're in prison. Why are you hiding everything under there?\"\n\nI have stencils, stationery, and so many things. It's to the point where my mattress is up and it's uncomfortable, but it's just the best place to keep everything. I've got three shelves as well in my bunk, which is goated, but I knocked them off with my shoulders when I tried to move.\n\nVana: Yeah, mine was making too much noise at night, so I angrily unmounted mine off of the wall.\n\n**MSM: Okay, I like this one. If you had to swap out red and black for your aesthetic, what colors would you pick?**\n\nHarlan: Green. Green and black. Yeah, for sure, green and black. I feel like that's just as evil.\n\nVana: Like a monster can.\n\nHarlan: Yup, Monster green, like a Monster Energy can.\n\n**MSM: I like it, like a neon green...that's sick.**\n\n**MSM: After the show, what's the first thing you do?**\n\nVana: We're all sweaty, and we run off stage together. We go, \"Let's go! That was a fucking fun show!\" Or, \"That was an okay show!\" and then we hug each other and then I chug water. The boys break down, and I go open up Pokemon cards.\n\nHarlan: By breakdown she means the stage, not breakdown in tears. Sometimes there's been times where we all break down in tears.\n\nVana: There has. Yeah.\n\nHarlan: Yeah. I wish I had an exciting answer for it, but we don't carry a crew because we're still at the kind of just above DIY level, so we all deconstruct the stage. I then come back and do our settlements. I settle the merch. I count the money, and then I advance to the next show coming up, so we get out about 3AM every night. I eat a slice of pizza or something, and that's it.\n\n**MSM: Favorite anime or manga?**\n\nVana: I'm watching Jujutsu Kaisen right now, and I'm really liking it. I really like the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood too.\n\nHarlan: Favorite for me would be Dragon Ball Z, it's up there of all time favorites, but then as far as modern stuff goes, I like a director named Makoto Shinkai. My favorite anime of all time is The Garden of Words. He did the 5 Centimeters Per Second anime. It's a really beautiful, sad anime. It's not so much like fighting crazy stuff.\n\nVana: And honorable mention, even though it's not technically an anime — Avatar: The Last Airbender.\n\nHarlan: Yeah, that's our goat, both of us. We both love that.\n\nVana: Anime people hate it when you call it anime. You get crucified when you call it anime.\n\n**MSM: Alright, let's do some 'This or That.'**\n\n**MSM: Night or early morning?**\n\nVana: Night.\n\nHarlan: Night.\n\n**MSM: Okay, night for both of you. Coffee or energy drinks?**\n\nHarlan: Energy drinks.\n\nVana: Coffee.\n\n**MSM: Coffee first, Vana, but you'll take an energy drink too?**\n\nVana: Oh, I'll take both. Happily.\n\n**MSM: Tattoos or piercings if you could only choose one?**\n\nVana: Tattoos\n\nHarlan: Tattoos.\n\n**MSM: Horror movies or psychological thrillers?**\n\nVana: Psychological thrillers\n\nHarlan: Psychological thrillers\n\n**MSM: For real though, I get too scared when it's gory.**\n\nVana: I like gory--\n\nHarlan: I like gory, but I like it to have a little more depth to it.\n\nVana: Yeah.\n\n**MSM: So we like the “whodunit.”**\n\n**MSM: Vampires or werewolves?**\n\nHarlan: Werewolves.\n\nVana: Vampires. [hisses]\n\nHarlan: Oh yeah, you literally have fangs.\n\n**MSM: Black boots or platform shoes?**\n\nVana: Platform\n\nHarlan: Black boots.\n\nVana: [holds up her foot] This kind is both!\n\nHarlan: I used to run boot platforms, and they were hyped. They made me feel like six three. I looked like a real fucking asshole.\n\nVana: [heh] Yeah, me too, I'm also six three.\n\n**MSM: Magic the Gathering or Pokemon?**\n\nHarlan: Pokemon.\n\nVana: Magic for playing, Pokemon for ripping.\n\n**MSM: The thrill of opening?**\n\nBoth: Yeah, the dopamine, the gambling. The gambling addiction.\n\n**MSM: Dive bar or goth club?**\n\nVana**:** Dive**** bar.\n\nHarlan: Is that not the same thing? [laughs] Goth clubs are usually in dive bars.\n\nHarlan: I'm gonna pass on both.\n\nVana: I don't know if I've ever been to a goth club.\n\nHarlan: You've never been to an emo night?\n\nVana: Is that a goth club? Yeah, I suppose yeah.\n\nHarlan: I'd just take goth club out of all of these.\n\n**MSM: Glitter or fake blood?**\n\nHarlan: Fake blood\n\nVana: Both! How do I do both?!\n\nHarlan: I've gotten wounded on stage so many times from mishitting my bass, where it's just got blood everywhere, and I'm like, \"yo, that's sick.\" [Smears it everywhere.]\n\nVana: Performative.\n\n**MSM: Yup, just roll with it. Okay, last one. Would you rather lose your phone for a week or have no caffeine for a month?**\n\nHarlan: No caffeine.\n\n**MSM: Okay, but is that for work or personal?**\n\nHarlan: Oh dawg, I like mainline reels to my veins. We're like two minutes to stage, and I'm just like, yo, quick reels, trying to unlock my phone with Face ID with a mask on. Nah, I need reels. I would do the phone. I did no caffeine for a month right before this tour, and I did not feel much different, really.\n\nVana: I could not leave the reels. I would struggle without caffeine, but I like reels more. I would soothe my caffeine headache with reels.\n\n**MSM: Okay, one more actually. Favorite destination? If you could go on a vacation, where would you want to go?**\n\nHarlan: Japan.\n\nVana: I've never been to Japan, but I really want to go.\n\nHarlan: Japan is the greatest country I've had the pleasure of going to and in my dream life I would be living somewhere isolated in a cabin in Japan.\n\nVana: I also really want to check out Prague and Germany because of all the gothic architecture and all of that. It looks creepy as fuck there, and I want to see all of the old stuff.\n\n**MSM: I love following band tours in the UK and seeing all of the old buildings and architecture.**\n\nVana: So sick, I can't wait.\n\n* * *\n\nA huge thank you to Vana for taking the time to chat with us, and congratulations again on an incredible first headliner tour. We can't wait to see what's next.\n\nCheck out their newest song here.\n\nInstagram // Facebook // Website // Tiktok",
