Australian pop-punk group BESTIES has a lot to celebrate! They recently signed to the Greyscale Records family and went straight to work releasing their newest single, "Deadmau5." Despite being a new song, the track is fun and somehow familiar for those of us who grew up in the scene.

Immediately out of the gate, this track hits you with a healthy dose of nostalgia and...bananas. At first glance, the song title caught my interest simply by referencing the EDM artist of my early teenage years. Prepared with this thought in mind, the first listen definitely did not disappoint. The track brought back all of the comfort of the music from those angsty teenage years.

Despite starting off quietly, the opening guitar solo sets the stage for one of the best build-ups of modern pop-punk. The instrumentals drive that familiar upbeat pace that makes you want to jump around as it plays, making it the perfect song for live shows.

Lyrically, this song has everything you could want from a classic pop-punk tune: love, self-deprecation, humor, angst, and rhymes. Admittedly, I was so engulfed in the music that after my first listen, I was still a bit confused where the "Deadmau5" reference came from that the title suggested. So I went back for more, this time focused on the words. Immediately, the chorus caught my attention. The lyrics, "Your mom and dad want you to move into their lakehouse// And have three kids with their accountant, he likes deadmau5// But I’m no good for that, they’d have a heart attack// If they ever knew, that I’m the one you choose ", are where the full emotions of the song relates to the listener. The familiar imagery of "NO RAGRATS" tattoos and standing outside the house with "speaker in the air" all add to the nostalgic scene the song plays out.

There is a lot that I could say to hype this song up in hopes that you'll want to check it out. But I think that the band perfectly sums it up with a reminder to all of us who are listening: "Life’s too short to be safe; take a risk, and don’t forget through it all, you’re still that dumb emo kid at heart, just like us."
