Notes & Trivia: I've been a huge metalhead ever since I was a little kid! This is a really fun curation of songs that I think are really beginner friendly for anyone interested in pure, aura-farming metal inspired by the fantasy genre, among other things. It includes a mix of bands I discovered on forums and bandcamp, plus some all-time legends such as Warlock/Doro, Motorhead, King Diamond and Bathory.

I was definitely inspired by reading C.J Cherryh (lesbian queen of speculative fiction and 80s sci-fi/fantasy)'s Morgaine Cycle for the first time which prompted me to start hunting down copies of her books.

Tolkien metal is a whole sub-genre and it's really fascinating to trawl through bandcamp and find some gems! The obvious ones on this list are Riders of Rohan and Helms Deep. I do have a gigantic playlist of this type of music somewhere, it's over 100 songs long.

Dream Widow is the fictional doom metal/thrash band created by the Foo Fighters in their ridiculous but really enjoyable horror b-movie, Studio 666! It's a real tongue-in-cheek project, but anyone remotely familiar with Grohl, he knows his stuff when it comes to metal for sure.

Notes & Trivia: A mixture of metal, punk and hardcore for when you are angry!

Includes some of my fave women and non-binary fronted Australian punk bands - Bouddica (inspired by Horrible Histories, seriously), Masochist, and Stabbitha and the Knifey Wifeys.

Also features some of the coolest people in Sydney's hardcore/punk history GANG CALLED SPEED, Low Life, and Straightjacket Nation (DX/Total Control/gtg).

Hellbringer are one of the best things to ever come out of Canberra and I wish they were still an active band!

Special shout out to The Bird for being one of the most entertaining performers, I knew as soon as I saw a Eurotwink with a BASSHUNTER tattoo get on a table in the middle of a warehouse in Copenhagen, I knew I was about to witness something incredible. The energy was crazy. Nike sneakers went flying. People who are really digging underscores, Jane Remover, and Oklou right now would really vibe with his music. Also, come on. The BASSHUNTER tattoo.

Purient is one of the coolest down-tempo, moody electronic musicians/producer and an integral part of the underground scene. I genuinely recommend all her music.

YL Hooi cannot be boxed into one genre but she is one of the coolest performers you could ever see in the underground Sydney scene, there's no words to describe someone who brings brass instruments to a DJ set and experiments with post-punk, dub, and krautrock.
