Introduction
One widely accepted reading of twentieth century Roman Catholicism is that the Catholic Church became part of the modern world as a result of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). And certainly, some of the most widely hailed conciliar documents'"The Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World," for example, and "The Declaration on Religious Freedom" 'reflect a new Catholic opening toward modern values.
