Alex Consani makes history as first trans woman on Met Gala host committee

American supermodel Alex Consani marked a historic moment at theMet Gala , becoming the first trans woman to serve on the event’s host committee.

Speaking on the red carpet at the annual fundraising gala for theMetropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Consani described her role as “a big moment”, saying it reflected how far the fashion industry has come in recognising transgender talent and visibility .

Consani attended the 2026 event wearing a bespoke Gucci gown designed by the house’s creative director, Demna. The look was unveiled during the Vogue livestream and attracted widespread attention on social media, where many praised its confidence and symbolism.

“I’m the first trans woman hosting the Met,” Consani said during an interview on the carpet. “It feels really powerful to be here and to take up space in a room that’s meant so much to fashion history”.

The Met Gala, often described as the most exclusive night in fashion, raises millions of dollars each year for the museum’s Costume Institute and is seen as a major cultural platform. Consani’s inclusion on the host committee is being viewed by supporters as a landmark step for representation in an industry that has long been criticised for its lack of diversity.

Consani, 22, has rapidly become one of the most prominent figures in global fashion. In 2024 she became the first transgender woman to win Model of the Year at the Fashion Awards , and later made history by walking in the revived Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

Beyond her runway work, she has built a large following online for her humour and outspoken approach to identity and fashion, positioning herself as a cultural figure as well as a model.

Her moment at the Met Gala comes amid wider debates in the United States over trans rights and visibility, particularly in education, healthcare and sport.
