Billboards declaring “God Made Trans People” appear across Kansas following trans ID ban

A new series of billboards declaring “God Made Trans People” has appeared along key highways across Kansas , coinciding with the state’s recent decision to invalidate updated identification documents held by transgender residents. The four‑week campaign, launched by the nonprofit Mayday Health , places signs across Kansas City , Topeka and Wichita , with organisers estimating they will reach more than 1.2 million drivers.

The campaign follows the implementation ofSenate Bill 244 , which took effect in February and requires all state‑issued identification to reflect sex assigned at birth. This change retroactively invalidates driver’s licences and birth certificates that had previously been updated by transgender people, leaving thousands without accurate or valid documents.

Liv Raisner, executive director of Mayday Health, described the placement of the billboards as a deliberate gesture of solidarity. Many transgender Kansans, she noted, are currently driving with documents that “don’t reflect who they are”, making everyday tasks such as commuting or shopping newly fraught. “We wanted trans Kansans to know while they’re driving to work, to the grocery store… we want them to see themselves reflected back,” she told The Advocate.

Raisner added that the message intentionally uses religious framing, reflecting the language often employed by lawmakers supporting the restrictions. “If you think God doesn’t make mistakes, that includes trans people,” she said. Each billboard directs viewers to Mayday Health’s website, which offers resources for gender‑affirming medical, mental‑health and financial support.

The campaign unfolds as Kansas lawmakers advance a broader suite of measures affecting trans rights. Recent legislation has not only invalidated updated IDs but also imposed restrictions on bathroom access and expanded enforcement measures around sex‑segregated facilities.

Raisner emphasised that while state officials may attempt to erase transgender identities from official records, “trans people deserve the same freedoms as all Americans” and remain an integral part of Kansas communities.
