Florida moves to let DeSantis remove local officials who back DEI initiatives
Florida lawmakers have approved a sweeping bill that would bar local governments from funding or promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives — and allow Governor Ron DeSantis to remove any elected official who does. The measure, passed by the state’s Republican‑controlled legislature, now heads to DeSantis, who is expected to sign it.
Under the proposal, cities and counties are prohibited from issuing resolutions that reference DEI, creating DEI offices or roles, or running programmes connected to race, gender or sex. The bill’s definition of DEI is broad, covering “any effort” to influence the makeup of a government workforce or offer what it describes as preferential treatment. While the legislation makes an exception for equal opportunity materials required by anti‑discrimination law, critics say the overall language leaves little room for legitimate equity‑focused work.
Local officials who violate the rules could be removed from their positions, and any resident would have the power to sue their local government for suspected breaches. The House passed the bill 77–37, with five Republicans joining Democrats in voting against it. The Senate approved it earlier in the month.
