"textContent": "I have never been a soccer person, so this year’s World Cup has not registered much on me beyond seeing an unusual number of foreign national team soccer jerseys on some days (despite the best efforts of the New York City and State governments to pretend that it is taking place in New York and not New Jersey.) But I did learn something interesting about the World Cup, or to be precise, World Cup branding, from a June 11, 2026 report in Morning Brew. Stadiums hosting World Cup matches are required to remove references to their normal sponsors pursuant to “FIFA’s requirement that stadiums be wiped clean to protect the organization’s multi-million dollar marketing deals…” FIFA is not the only international sports body with this policy. According to the report, SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, which has been de-branded “Los Angeles Stadium” for the World Cup, will be de-branded again for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
