Sony’s Very Long-Term PS3 Support

On February 8, 2022, I wrote an article praising Nintendo for its apparent commitment to support the Nintendo Switch (which is still being supported notwithstanding the presence of Switch 2) for a long period. While Nintendo is still supporting its 8th generation Switch, it no longer supports its sixth generation console, the Nintendo Wii. The same cannot be said of Sony, which released an update for its sixth generation PlayStation 3 on March 18, 2026. The PlayStation 3 made it stateside in November 2006 and its “life-span” concluded in November 2016. But Sony has quietly continued providing annual updates which allow PS3 owners to continue using their consoles to play Blu-Ray disks, which you can see on the official website. If Sony releases a new update in 2027, it will have more than 20 years of updates for what is now a decidedly “retro” console. I tip my hat to Sony for going through the effort to ensure that PlayStation 3 owners can continue to use their consoles to watch Blu-Ray movies.
