GTA 6 Official Trailer Analysis: Why Vice City is the Perfect Setting for Jason & Lucia (And My Concerns About the Modern Social Media Focus)

Hi everyone,

Without a doubt, the official trailer for GTA 6 is the most important and loudest event in the gaming industry in recent years. Today, I wanted to share my thoughts, analysis, and concerns based strictly on the official footage and assets shared by Rockstar Games so far.

Looking at the official trailer, the current story direction inspired by Bonnie and Clyde—featuring a pair of lovers committing street robberies—is fascinating. In my opinion, this dynamic is by far the most interesting direction for a modern open-world game, and here is why.

GTA has never been just a generic gangster game; it’s always been a brilliant satire and parody of American culture. Millions of players worldwide fell in love with this exaggerated, dark-humored atmosphere combined with a stellar storyline. If Rockstar maintains its classic satirical edge through the relationship of Jason and Lucia, we are in for a masterpiece. However, in today's modern climate, there's always a risk of compromises. I truly hope Rockstar keeps the raw, untamed climate we all love without watering down the writing.

Now, let's talk about the most crucial aspect shown in the official assets: the setting. The GTA universe is beautifully divided into two main eras: the 3D Era (GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories) and the HD Era (GTA IV with its DLCs, GTA V, and now GTA VI).

Rockstar has given us three main cities based on real-world locations:
1. Liberty City – the concrete, gritty jungle of GTA III, LCS, and GTA IV.
2. Los Santos – the city of business, celebrities, and Hollywood-style glamour (GTA SA and GTA V). A great setting, but sometimes feeling a bit too clean for a raw gangster game.
3. Vice City – the beautiful, neon-lit paradise of crime. In the 3D era, it gave us an incredible story about building a drug empire from scratch.

Returning to Vice City (and the state of Leonida, inspired by Florida) as seen in the official footage is a brilliant choice. The map looks several times larger than GTA V’s already massive world. More importantly, Vice City is the only place where a Bonnie and Clyde story can truly work under this specific atmosphere. Jason and Lucia are street-level hustlers, and this neon paradise naturally attracts that exact kind of hustle. I couldn't imagine them in the gloomy Liberty City or modern Los Santos. It would be like forcing Niko Bellic to live in the glamorous Vinewood hills; it just wouldn't fit the character's core identity.

However, based on the official trailer, I do have one major concern: the heavy focus on in-game social media, TikTok-style streams, and smartphone culture. Personally, I think this story would have peaked if it were set in an analog era, like the late 90s or early 2000s. It would allow for amazing connections to the legendary 3D era, and those years just felt more colorful, raw, and fitting for a criminal romance. I really hope the writing is strong enough to justify choosing this modern, hyper-connected era of smartphones.

What do you guys think? Did Rockstar make the right choice regarding the modern timeline based on what we saw in the official trailer?

P.S. Since I am deeply passionate about preserving the history and atmosphere of the classic 3D Era, I am currently building a dedicated video archive on YouTube called PlayWithTiger, where I upload high-quality No Commentary walkthroughs of these exact classic games (utilizing upscale emulation for titles like Vice City Stories to avoid that pixelated mess on modern monitors). Feel free to look it up if you want to experience these classic worlds in their purest form!
