Because Jaws is one of my all-time faves, I have cultivated an unhealthy fascination with shark movies. I admire any filmmaker who dares to swim in the same lane as Spielberg on this subject. Fin flicks are almost a genre unto themselves. There’s an entire ocean of imitators out there. Some are compelling thrillers like Deep Blue Sea and The Shallows, and also entertaining guilty pleasures like The Meg and Under Paris_._
Thrash , the new shark movie that just dropped on Netflix, is definitely in the latter category.
Thrash is written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, a B-movie impresario with a wicked sense of humor who also gave us Nazi zombies in Dead Snow and a badass Santa in Violent Night. If you’re looking for intimate drama, he’s not your guy. But if you want over-the-top mayhem served with your popcorn, Wirkola’s got you covered. His movies aren’t very original and don’t make much sense, but they’re as fun as a rickety roller coaster at a low-rent roadside carnival.
