The Durham Public Schools Board of Education’s March 26 meeting opened with a long list of student and staff achievements, from championship scholar-athletes and standout STEM competitors to educators whose work reaches far beyond the classroom. But the celebratory tone gave way to harder questions about the district’s priorities for next year.

Board members spent much of the night weighing two big issues: how to fund meaningful raises for employees and whether $2.8 million for Chromebooks and classroom technology is the right investment at a time when schools still face basic facility needs. Parents and staff urged caution on more screen-based spending, while district leaders argued that aging devices and repeated breakdowns are already disrupting learning.

By the end of the meeting, the board unanimously approved Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis’s proposed 2026–27 budget and sent it to Durham County commissioners, even as several members voiced concern about pay equity, budget clarity, and how closely spending decisions connect to student outcomes. In a quieter but notable move, the board also approved a new Arts Proficiency endorsement that will allow students to graduate with an arts seal on their diploma and transcript.
