Ube, Taro, and Purple Sweet Potato, Are They the Same?

With the resurgence of the popularity of Ube, we hear frequently about how Ube is supposedly made from the Taiwanese Taro or from the Okinawa Purple Sweet Potato. But are these true? Short answer: No. --- --- Ube, or Dioscorea alata, is native and originally from the Philippine islands. Archaeological evidence as far back as 11,000 years ago were found in the archipelago, and they also have the most number of Ube varieties in the world. Pre-colonial "Filipinos" were already cultivating Ube and using it as food, and the earliest record dated 1613 showed that Ube was already used as a dessert—like Ube jams, locally known as Halaya. ✅ Did you know? The name "Ube" is a Filipino word! Ube (Dioscorea alata) came from the Philippines, and there is no question about that. Botanically, there is also no doubt that Ube is distinctly different from the Taiwanese Taro (Colocasia esculenta) and the Okinawa Purple Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas) crops. In other words, scrutinize if a product claiming to be an Ube is a real Ube or Dioscorea alata. Many marketers are labelling their products as Ube when what they used was the Taiwanese Taro or the Okinawa Purple Sweet Potato crop, and in some cases, also used a purple colouring to make it look like a real Ube. Ube was also treated as a sacred crop in pre-Colonial "Philippines" and believed to be a gift from God.
