Bleak rural setting books not set in USA/CA/UK

Looking for a book with a depressing, isolated rural setting. Rural gothic and supernatural elements are fine. I'm interested in fiction, adult contemporary or modern classics but it can be YA as well. I'm open to non-fiction too. Any suggestions are appreciated! by CodeAlternative2240
